Joan and Dr. Michael Schultz
Longtime members and supporters of Beth El Congregation have had tremendous impact on Beth El and the larger Baltimore community. Dr. Schultz has more than 35 years of experience as a breast surgeon and is affiliated with several local hospitals. He leads The Breast Center at the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, and its team of dedicated breast oncology experts. Dr. Schultz is committed to the highest standard of patient care and minimizing the stress patients experience in waiting for results. He guarantees an immediate review by pathologists, leading to a follow-up patient consultation within 24 hours after a biopsy.
Joan speaks fondly of the many special moments and milestones celebrated with her family and the clergy at Beth El, including a recent baby naming for their granddaughter. She speaks of Beth El as a synagogue community that is inclusive and welcoming. The mikveh holds a special place in her heart as a space where her family has found meaning and connection throughout the years.
Perhaps Mel Brooks put it best when he said, "Richard Lewis may just be the Franz Kafka of modern-day comedy." Lewis has taken his lifelong therapy fodder and carved it into a commanding, compelling art form. His early career as a stand-up brought him to the top of his ranks. Over time and through a variety of mediums, he broadened his exposure and more and more came on board to appreciate his brilliantly warped world.
The NY Times said, “This renowned comedian, often considered to be the heir to Lenny Bruce, is a master of long form storytelling who turns his endless neurotic energy into brilliant comedy.” Comedy Central has recognized Mr. Lewis as one of the top 50 stand-up comedians of all time and he was charted on GQ Magazine's list of the '20th Century's Most Influential Humorists'. In December of 1989, Lewis achieved a very personal goal...he performed at Carnegie Hall to a standing room only audience.
Case for giving: Generations Park
The proceeds from LIVE! From Beth El will fund the construction of an exciting new addition to the Beth El campus: Generations Park. A park experience surrounded by natural beauty and landscaping, Generations Park will engage members of all generations as they come together to learn, play, pray, and reflect. The plans for Generations Park include new and expanded elements to give Beth El members and school families more opportunities to enjoy our outdoor spaces. Some of the key features include:
- A large covered pavilion for outdoor prayer services, concerts, wedding ceremonies, and shaded activities.
- A state-of-the-art playground with new developmentally appropriate play elements including a winding bike path.
- A water play area for our summer camp with a safe rubber play surface that will also function as a sports court.
- An expanded vegetable garden for outdoor educational opportunities for our preschoolers
- A paved walking path encircling the whole park and providing a safe and serene place to walk and push strollers.
